Reading transits to your chart

Distinguish the current sky, natal placements and whole-sign aspects.

A natal chart records a birth moment. A transit calculation records another stated instant and compares its planetary positions with natal placements. Changing the transit instant does not change the birth chart.

Check the instant first

Read the time shown with the result. A transit is a snapshot, not a daily forecast or a record of an entire month. A faster-moving planet can change sign or aspect relationships sooner than a slow-moving one.

Understand the aspect model

BirenAstro reports its implemented whole-sign aspect relationships to natal placements. A whole-sign relationship is not the same thing as an exact degree contact, an orb measurement or a prediction of the moment an event will occur. Read the named transiting planet and natal target separately.

Use an example carefully

If the result lists a transiting planet aspecting natal Mercury, first locate natal Mercury and understand its sign and house context. The relationship can prompt reflection on Mercury-related topics such as communication or learning. It cannot establish that a particular message, examination or contract will succeed.

Compare timing systems without conflating them

Dashas are periods derived from the birth Moon; transits compare positions at another instant. They answer different calculation questions. An interpretive comparison requires the natal context and clear limits, rather than treating two displayed labels as independent proof of a prediction.

How the aspect distances are counted

Count the transiting planet’s own sign as one. The opposite sign is seven. All nine grahas receive this seventh-sign aspect in BirenAstro’s model. Mars also aspects the fourth and eighth signs, Jupiter the fifth and ninth, and Saturn the third and tenth. The nodes receive no additional special aspects in this convention.

For Saturn in Pisces, the third sign is Taurus, the seventh Virgo and the tenth Sagittarius. A natal placement in one of those signs receives the corresponding whole-sign aspect. A natal placement in Pisces is recorded as a conjunction instead.

Read the two planets in different roles

The transiting planet supplies the moving theme: Saturn responsibility and structure, Jupiter growth and judgment, Mars action and friction, Venus appreciation and relationship, Mercury communication, the Sun visibility and purpose, and the Moon changing emotional emphasis. Rahu and Ketu bring the nodal themes of attraction and release.

The natal target supplies the part of the birth chart being engaged. Saturn to natal Mercury can be discussed through giving communication a clearer structure or returning to a demanding learning task. Jupiter to natal Venus brings growth and judgment into a topic of value or relationship. Read the natal target’s house to locate the arena.

Snapshots, repeated contacts and exactness

A whole-sign aspect remains while the relevant sign relationship remains. It does not become exact merely because a result is listed. An exact degree contact, the application or separation of an orb, and a sequence of future returns require additional calculations beyond this snapshot.

Retrograde motion can make a planet revisit a sign after leaving it. To investigate a period, compare stated instants and keep the natal chart fixed. Do not treat a single current-sky result as if it were a complete history or forecast.
