Rahu is the ascending lunar node, one of the two intersections of the Moon’s orbital plane with the ecliptic. It is a calculated point rather than a physical planet. Vedic astrology nevertheless includes it among the nine grahas because the nodal axis has a central place in eclipse symbolism and interpretation.

In a reading, Rahu is associated with appetite for experience, unfamiliar environments, ambition, fascination and amplification. It directs attention toward what seems compelling precisely because it is not yet settled or fully understood.

The attraction of the unfamiliar

Rahu’s symbolism can be explored through learning a new culture, seeking recognition in an unfamiliar field or becoming absorbed in a technology. The common thread is reaching beyond an established frame. The constructive expression is experimentation; the difficulty is losing proportion because the next achievement always promises more satisfaction.

This does not make foreignness, unconventional interests or ambition inherently problematic. A useful reading distinguishes a real wish to explore from the assumption that something unfamiliar must be superior to what is already available.

Read Rahu and Ketu as an axis

Rahu and Ketu occupy opposite signs and, when houses are available, opposite houses. A second–eighth house axis brings personal resources into relationship with shared resources and obligations. A fourth–tenth axis connects a private base with public responsibilities. Read both ends rather than treating Rahu as an isolated point.

For example, Rahu in the tenth and Ketu in the fourth can introduce a discussion about attraction toward a visible role and the relationship with familiar foundations. The reading becomes more specific when the sign rulers and planets on either end are examined.

Why the sign ruler is important

A node has no physical light or ordinary planetary body. In many interpretive approaches, considerable attention is therefore paid to the lord of the sign it occupies and to planets closely connected with it. A Rahu in a Mercury-ruled sign brings Mercury’s placement into the reading.

BirenAstro does not assign own-sign, exaltation or debilitation dignity to Rahu. Schools differ on these assignments, so the engine reports a neutral dignity label. Neutral here describes the scope of the table, not the absence of an interpretive theme.

Common questions

Why is Rahu included if it is not a planet?
Graha is an astrological category that includes the Sun, Moon and lunar nodes as well as the visible planets. It is not identical to the modern astronomical category planet.
Are mean and true Rahu different objects?
They are different mathematical models of the same lunar node. The selected model can shift its reported longitude slightly; compare node settings when comparing charts.
